Hoards and stray finds tell us about the Viking presence. Perhaps the most important is the hoard from the chapel at Kirk O'Banks (ND253740). In 1872 a cist was disturbed containing silver bracelets or arm rings. They were the same weight and were 'ring-money', silver objects used as currency from the late 10th century onwards. This is, so far, the only Viking period hoard from Caithness.
